Beyond Silicon Slopes: Utah's next tech boom is getting physical
- Utah's tech scene is evolving beyond Silicon Slopes, focusing on physical innovations.
- Key industries include aerospace, advanced manufacturing, energy and quantum technology.
- Utah's deep-tech growth is driven by increased capital and intersecting industries.
Utah's next chapter in tech is looking a lot more physical.
Engineers are building military drones in Bluffdale that can be carried out the back of a factory and test-flown almost immediately. In Emery County, an advanced nuclear reactor recently reached criticality outside the national laboratory system. Across the state, companies and researchers are working in aerospace, advanced manufacturing, energy, quantum technology and other industries where innovation doesn't just live on a screen.

DOJ Won't Defend Suppressor Registry In Court After Congress Killed The $200 Tax
The Justice Department has now made it official: it will not defend part of the 92-year-old National Firearms Act in court, confirming what we reported in August.
Solicitor General D. John Sauer told Congress that "the Department of Justice has determined not to file an appeal" in Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF, the case in which a federal judge ruled that NFA registration requirements for suppressors and short-barreled rifles and shotguns are unconstitutional now that the tax behind them is gone. The letter, addressed to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and dated Sept. 24, was made public this week.
The NFA has required owners of suppressors and short-barreled guns to pay a $200 tax and register with the federal government since 1934.

Rioter, 15, arrested for burning woman's face with makeshift flame-thrower as student riots continue to rock France
French police have arrested a 15-year-old rioter after he used a makeshift flame-thrower to burn a woman's face.
The attack was captured on video as thousands of youngsters went on the rampage over poor conditions in their schools.
In footage taken on Friday in Marseille, the victim appears to have been shoved against a bus stop after she called for an end to the vandalism. But as she recovers, a hooded individual walks forward and, using an aerosol can and a lighter, launches a burst of flame at her.
She received medical treatment at the scene and it was reported in Le Parisien that she had suffered first-degree burns.
“Indiscriminate Mass Surveillance”: Judge Says Warrantless Flock Searches Unconstitutional
A federal judge in Oklahoma tossed a drug case, because a deputy used a Flock number-plate-recognition system to access the defendant’s travel history, without a warrant and without probable cause.
District Judge Sarah Hill ruled that a Tulsa County deputy, Freddie Alaniz, made an “unconstitutional warrantless search” to query a license-plate database simply because a car had a California license plate.
US delivers latest F-16s to Taiwan
The sale of the newly built fighter jets has drawn repeated rebukes from Beijing
The US has delivered Taiwan’s first two newly built F-16 fighter jets, part of an $8 billion order that has repeatedly drawn condemnation from Beijing.
The two aircraft, the modern F-16V Block 70 variant, arrived in Taiwan on Friday. They are the first of 66 new fighters approved for sale by Washington in 2019.
The new jets will join Taiwan’s existing fleet of older F-16 variants, which Taipei has operated since the late 1990s. The first aircraft from the 66-plane order were initially expected in 2023, but deliveries were delayed by software development and production issues.
