Spanish Fork High says emergency app helped during hoax call lockdown
SPANISH FORK — The Nebo School District credits a new phone app for quick communication and direction during Wednesday's lockdown after hoax calls came in about a shooting threat.
The app is called Disaster Incident Report and Security, or DIR-S.
District spokeswoman Lana Hiskey said staff members at Spanish Fork High School downloaded and were trained on how to use the app last week.
"You could call this either coincidental or a blessing," she said. "Just a week ago, we were piloting an app."
The principal of the school put it to use after police officers swarmed the campus Wednesday morning, saying a call about a shooting threat had come into dispatch.
Male with 'foreign accent' made Utah hoax school shooting calls, police say
SALT LAKE CITY — As state and local police continue to investigate a series of hoax school shooting calls made on Wednesday, prompting a large police response in multiple Utah cities, officials say all the calls were made by the same male who had a "foreign accent."
Police from Box Elder to Utah County, and in areas such as Grand and Garfield counties, responded to 13 calls between 9:30 a.m. and noon on Wednesday claiming that an active shooter was in a school.
On Thursday, the Utah Department of Public Safety said all the calls were made by someone with a foreign accent, though spokeswoman Hillary Koellner said she did not know what nationality the accent resembled.

A Spanish Fork man charged Friday with killing his mother and stepfather had pictures of their deceased bodies on his phone, according to police.
But the charging documents do not provide any possible motive for the killings.
Police seek help identifying 2 accused of making bomb threat at North Logan Walmart
The young men, believed to be between the ages of 16 and 20, allegedly entered the store at 1550 N. Main, approached a Walmart employee and told them they had put a bomb in the store. They then turned around and walked out, according to North Park police.
"Because of the seriousness of the threat, and the recent events with the (Nashville) school shooting that have happened, we took it and treated it as a serious threat," said North Park Police Chief Kent Goodrich.
The store was evacuated. Police brought a bomb dog from USU to follow the suspects' trail. No bomb was found.
