Texas GOP chairman Allen West falsely says Texas could secede from the US: 'We could go back to being our own Republic'
Experts, however, say that Texas cannot legally secede and leave the United States to become its own republic. The annexation resolution West is referring to stipulates that Texas could, in the future, choose to divide itself into five new states, not divide itself from the US and declare independence. West mistook the congressional annexation resolution that made Texas a state for the Texas constitution.
Texas does have a history of secession. In 1861, Texas voted in favor of secession and later left the Union to join the Confederate States of America, setting the stage for the American Civil War. After the Confederacy lost the war, the Supreme Court ruled that Texas had remained a state, despite joining the Confederate States of America in an act of rebellion for four years, and that any acts ratified by the Confederate-era state legislature were "absolutely null." Texas eventually rejoined the Union in 1870.

Los Angeles County on Friday announced that they were returning prime beachfront land to the descendants of a black couple who bought it in 1912, and were forced out just over a decade later. The KKK were trying to drive the few black families that had arrived in Manhattan Beach from the land, but Willa and Charles Bruce were determined to keep hold of the beachfront resort they built. The site was one of the few places where African Americans could freely enjoy the coast. The city decided to force them out through eminent domain, and the Bruces fought in court, but lost, ultimately moving away. Now, thanks to lobbying from their descendants and from local historians, the city has agreed to hand the plot back - land which is estimated by some to be worth around $70 million. The descendants have not yet said whether they will sell the land, live there, or lease it back to the city, which currently has a lifeguard center on the plot.
House inches closer to enacting slavery reparations
A bill that could lead to slavery reparations took a major step forward Friday when the House Judiciary Committee scheduled it for a debate and vote next week.
If the legislation — which would create a commission to study reparations — is voted out of the committee, it would head to the House floor for the first full congressional vote on the measure since 1989.
