LAPD beating handcuffed inmate shortly before he died
Jose Carlos Hoyos-Munoz, 58, was seen being kicked and manhandled by officers during a chaotic incident in his cell in the Van Nuys Regional Jail in San Fernando Valley, California in the hours before he died on July 15.
The footage showed the inmate being wrestled to the ground as he became combative and erratic, and the LAPD said a hood was placed over his head after he spit at officers.
Hoyos-Munoz was then left on his bed in a prone position with his hands behind his back, and he was found a short time later unconscious and not breathing, a spokesman said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. A medical examiner has not yet released a cause or manner of death.
