The government of Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani is seeking to build 250,000 to 300,000 housing units for poor and middle-class families. The new city on the outskirts of Baghdad will include universities, commercial centers, schools and health centers and should be completed in four to five years.

Russia has called for an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting after Ukraine launched cluster bombs on the border city of Belgorod that killed 14 civilians on Saturday.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed Kiev deployed cluster munitions, banned by 110 nations under a 2008 UN convention, against civilian targets, which it called a “terrorist act.”

The missiles were also launched using a RM-70 Vampire, made by the Czech Republic, a NATO member.

Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy demanded answers for why NATO weaponry was used by Ukraine against Russian civilians.

Utah Republican lawmaker wants to legalize lottery to help pay for property tax theft

Rep. Kera Birkeland has heard from several older constituents on fixed incomes who are struggling to keep up with rising property taxes, and the Morgan Republican has an unconventional proposal for relief: legalize the lottery in Utah.

The Beehive State is one of the few remaining holdouts in the United States that doesn't offer some kind of lottery, along with Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii and Nevada. While the state's politics generally favor unregulated business, the prevailing faith — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — which is followed by a majority of state lawmakers, is opposed to all forms of gambling.

Utah and Hawaii are the only states that prohibit all forms of gambling.

But Birkeland said legislative researchers estimate the state is missing out on as much as $200 million in revenue from lottery tickets, which is currently going to neighboring states like Idaho, Wyoming and Arizona as Utah residents cross state lines to purchase tickets.

"I talked to a gentleman whose dad is 92 years old, and his property tax bill has gone up so much that he is having to put his house up for sale," she told "He's paid his fair share, why is he being forced out of his home to pay those taxes?"

Birkeland says she has yet to write a stipulation into the bill that would require tax revenue gained from lottery sales be used to offset the tax burden of older adults on fixed incomes.

Comments- The state already has a budget surplus... There shouldn't be property tax. No one should have the threat of losing their home because they can't afford to pay property taxes.Until that is abolished, you really do not own your home… The only way I'd be okay with this is if it eliminated property tax, state income tax, the gas tax, and food tax. Short of this, it's not worth it.

Netherlands Should Prepare for War With Russia – Army Chief

The Netherlands should urgently get ready to face a security challenge posed by an “increasingly assertive” Russia, the nation’s Land Forces commander, Lieutenant General Martin Wijnen, said on Thursday. The EU nation should strengthen its military and help society adapt to the potential hardships of war, he added.

The general claimed that Moscow has designs on the Baltic States, three former Soviet republics which have joined NATO and the EU, after it is done with Ukraine.

Socialist Protests Erupt In Argentina As Milei Implements "Austerity" Cuts

In a scene that is probably a small taste of what is to come, socialist activists and workers unions carrying images of Che Guevara and Eva Peron converged on Buenos Aires to protest Javier Milei's impending “austerity” cuts.  The cuts are a part of Milei's sweeping economic measures that will erase or rewrite over 300 rules regulating and restricting private enterprise within the nation.

Deregulation, protesters say, will pave the way for big business interests while reducing welfare programs and protections for the public.  The protests are of course built upon a number of assumptions and are reactionary at best, given that Milei has been in office for a mere two weeks.

Choppers to Descend on Las Vegas to Monitor Nuclear Threat Ahead of New Year’s Eve

Tax dollars will be put to work guarding some of America’s kitschiest landmarks this weekend as the federal government conducts helicopter flights over Las Vegas.

The flights are designed to monitor radiation in the city before upcoming New Year’s Eve festivities. A so-called “dirty bomb” containing nuclear material would result in higher than normal radiation levels. The Nuclear Emergency Support Team’s (NEST) surveillance flights are intended to observe any potential threat and allow for a security response.

The group falls within the operations of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) overseen by the US Department of Energy.

“The public may see NNSA’s twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter, which is equipped with radiation-sensing technology,” read a press release on the Department of Energy’s website.

“The helicopter will fly in a grid pattern over the areas at 150 feet (or higher) above the ground at a speed of approximately 80 mph. Flyovers will occur only during daylight hours and are estimated to take approximately two hours to complete per area.”
