B'Nai Israel Temple religious legacy lives on in Salt Lake Art Museum

The Jewish roots of Utah reach back to 1854, when Fanny Brooks and her husband briefly visited Salt Lake City while traveling to California. A decade later, the Brooks family returned to Utah and settled on Third and Main Street in Salt Lake City.
Brooks, who immigrated from Germany, became an accepted member of the Salt Lake community and sent her children to a Sunday School for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints until the first Jewish synagogue was built in the city.
In 1873, a new Jewish congregation called Congregation B'nai Israel was formed in Salt Lake City. A synagogue for the congregation was built on the corner of 300 South and West Temple a decade later.
In 1885, the congregation split into two different groups: Congregation B'nai, which transitioned to Reform Judaism; and Congregation Montefiore, which began as Orthodox Judaism before transitioning into Conservative Judaism.

Tennessee Plans All-Female Lethal Injection Team at Request of State’s First Woman Being Executed in 200 Years
Tennessee is preparing an all-female team to give a lethal injection to Christa Gail Pike on Wednesday, a request her lawyers made due to decades of sexual abuse and PTSD.
Pike, 50, is the only woman on the state’s death row. The sentence is scheduled to be carried out at 10 a.m. at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. If it goes as planned, she will be the first woman Tennessee has executed in more than 200 years.
Pike’s attorneys asked that male guards stay out of the room when she is strapped down for pentobarbital.
They argued that being restrained by men would remind her of childhood rapes.
In January 1995, Pike, then 18, and two other Job Corps students lured 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer onto the University of Tennessee agriculture campus in Knoxville.
Slemmer was brutally beaten. They carved pentagrams and satanic symbols into her body and slit her throat.
Her head was so badly destroyed that Pike was able to keep a piece of her skull.
