A commercial pilot flying from Dubai to Israel attacked another pilot before being overpowered by passengers in what is feared to have been an attempted hijacking.
Israeli passengers have said they believe the attacker was attempting to crash the Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, after stabbing the other pilot.
A 'major disaster was narrowly avoided', an Israeli official said, describing how travellers onboard the flight managed to prevent an 'Israeli 9/11' by tying up the assailant.
The plane was cruising at 34,000ft when it plummeted 17,000ft in less than two minutes, before transmitting an emergency signal of unlawful interference and being diverted to Saudi Arabia.
Israel closed its airspace and scrambled warplanes amid fears the jet had been hijacked, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency security meeting with Defence Minister Israel Katz.
Another passenger on the Boeing 737 MAX said: 'We heard screams on the plane. Then they opened the cockpit and we saw blood, and someone had stabbed the pilot with a pocketknife.'
She described how the Israeli passengers helped restrain an attacker along with members of the crew. 'We prayed, "Shema Yisrael",' she said.
'There were also moments when we thought we weren’t going to make it out alive.'

A British pilot helped save a flight bound for Israel from plunging to the ground after the captain was allegedly stabbed by his co-pilot in a suspected hijacking attempt, a passenger said.
Passengers and crew on the Flydubai jet managed to tie up and stop the alleged attacker from what they believe was his attempted suicide mission in crashing the plane.
It has since emerged one of those heroes who saved the plane, and the lives of those onboard, was a British off-duty pilot.
'There were two pilots in the front, one stabbed the other, and there were two spare pilots who were supposed to operate the next flight.
'The relief pilots are European, one of them British, who entered [the cockpit] and pulled the aircraft up, pulled the yoke, stabilised the plane and landed us in Saudi Arabia.'
Explaining how he broke through the door, Mr Hayun said: 'The pilot who was stabbed was simply very close to the door, so it was hard for us to open it.'
However, he added 'before he [the stabbed pilot] collapsed' he managed to open the door. 'When I entered, I saw the attacker on the instruments, between the two seats... there were no pilots in the seats.
'One was down, one was on the instruments. And another guy came in with me. I grabbed the attacker, put him in a chokehold, and pulled him - first and foremost - outside.'
Mr Hayun described how the attacker was 'trying to destroy the instruments in order to disable the plane'. This made him scream for help from the 'Israeli guys with us on the plane', and together they 'pinned him down to keep him secure'.
He then 'pulled the controls [of the plane]'. When questioned by Israel's PM on how he knew what to do, Mr Hayun said he drew inspiration from TV show Air Disasters, which investigates notable aviation crises.

He used a system he invented called BakhtarRadar, originally developed to find buried tunnels and hidden structures, to scan beneath the boat-shaped Durupınar mound and see whether it was solid natural rock or a man-made structure.
That process has now concluded that the object under the Durupınar mound is not a natural rock formation, but a large organized man-made object with corridors, chambers and hallways inside.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a package of 10 gun bills into law that he says will enhance what he considers to be the state's already exemplary record of firearms safety.
They include a training requirement for the purchase of a gun, expanding criteria for the state's extreme risk protection orders, voluntary firearms storage by law enforcement to prevent violent crime and suicide, and a requirement for firearms blocking technology on 3D printers in the state by July 1, 2029.
The new law adds a requirement for a four-hour training course that must cover firearm handling and safety as well as a live-fire component. The law becomes effective Jan. 1, 2029.
