Here's how much you need to earn to afford a home in Salt Lake County

  • Homebuyers in Salt Lake County need $187,000 annual income for median-priced homes.
  • New home sales fell 10.5% from June to July due to affordability issues.
  • Experts urge policymakers to address high housing costs by building affordable starter units.

The study comes just weeks after new data showed the median sales price for a single-family home in Utah's most populous county hit a record-high $645,000 during the second quarter of 2026.

"What that translates to in income necessary is roughly $187,000 a year," Clewett said, "and that's county-wide."

When wildfire smoke and rain collide, it may fall as fertilizer, U. study finds

  • A University of Utah study finds wildfire smoke can fertilize ecosystems when mixed with rain.
  • The study shows smoke-rain events deliver significant nitrogen phosphorus and potassium to ecosystems.
  • Researchers emphasize understanding smoke's impact on ecosystems amid increasing wildfire frequency and intensity.

But what exactly is in the rain when it collides with wildfire smoke?

These types of events can cause "large bursts" of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to tumble to the ground with the rain, potentially fertilizing land and water ecosystems, according to a new study led by the University of Utah.

KSL Comments - I'm pretty sure I learned this 50 years ago in elementary school. Plus the theory of the gasses released in smoke were absorbed into the leaves of trees and made the trees grow better. Thanks for study for what we all already knew.

Migrant boat smashes into girl, 17, leaving her for dead

Migrant boat smashes into girl, 17, leaving her with multiple fractures - then continues to Italian beach after men on board decide not to help her

A 17-year-old tourist has been left seriously injured after a speeding migrant boat ploughed into her while she was swimming off Sardinia's coast.

The small boat was carrying 14 migrants when it struck the girl around 200m off Su Giudeu Beach in Sardinia, Italy, on August 16.

The vessel appears to continue towards the coast after crashing into the teenager rather than stopping to help her.

The teenager, who was on holiday on the island and has not been named, suffered several fractures in the horrific collision, which was captured on video. She also lost consciousness, leaving her at risk of drowning in the water.

Beachgoers rushed to her aid before she was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Cagliari, where she was admitted to intensive care in a serious condition.

Is Putin about to test 'Flying Chernobyl' nuclear-powered missile that can fly for DAYS?

Putin may be about to test a nuclear-powered cruise missile – dubbed the Flying Chernobyl – that can fly for days, according to analysts.

An influx of aircraft and shipping has converged in the Arctic in a telltale sign that a new experimental firing is expected of a weapon powered by its own atomic reactor, say analysts.

The 'invincible' Burevestnik missile - with a nickname inspired by the nuclear catastrophe that could be inflicted, much like the Chernobyl power plant explosion in 1986 - carries a nuclear warhead with an 'unlimited range' and is designed to fly for days at a time before striking the West, according to the Russians.

'Violence in front of my house': Iron County mom talks of repeated Flock camera vandalism

  • Mary Ellen Crase witnessed two teens vandalizing a Flock camera on July 23 in front of her home.
  • Crase expressed concerns about safety due to repeated vandalism incidents near her home.
  • She attempted to contact Flock Inc. for information but received no response.

Crase said she witnessed two teenagers and yelled out, "I'm calling the cops," at which time she said they ran away. Police came, and two teens were arrested and are now being accused of cutting down that camera.

KSL Comments - There's an argument to be made the Ring cameras are way worse and you don't see people ripping those down. They record the streets, facial recognition (which FLOCK does not do) and more. When you rip down a FLOCK camera, you just end up paying for a new one out of your pocket. The city votes to install them using your tax dollars.

Roland Nice spent eight minutes in the car park in Haverhill, Suffolk, after discovering he was not allowed to pay in cash.

After trudging between two machines with the help of his walking stick only to realise his 20-year-old Nokia couldn't download the payment app, he left.

16 Facts About The Shocking Decline Of Public Education In The U.S. That Every American Should Know

Virtually everyone agrees that our public schools are in a state of decline. Needless to say, it isn’t because we aren’t spending enough money. The federal government, our state governments and our local governments are collectively spending nearly a trillion dollars a year on public education. That is a colossal pile of money. Since 1960, spending per student has increased by 350 percent. That is even after adjusting for inflation. At this stage, we spend more money per student than any other nation on the entire planet other than Luxembourg. Anyone that believes that we can solve our education crisis by spending even more money is simply being delusional.

For nearly a trillion dollars a year, we should be getting a world class education system.

But we aren’t.

In fact, students in the U.S. just keep dropping down the global rankings.

Has World War III Already Started?

Shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, I wrote a column under the headline “This Is How World War III Begins.” More than four years on, I wonder how much I got right.

My argument was based on the origins of World War II, which did not simply start with Germany’s invasion of Poland on Sept. 1, 1939. Instead, the war was an accumulation of regional wars and crises, beginning with Japan’s invasion of Manchuria in 1931, which gradually gathered into a single global conflict.

He Was in the NFL. Then He Got a Better Offer to Play College Football Again.

For decades, college football has prepared athletes for the pros. But this offseason, players are going in the opposite direction.

“College sports is a profession in today’s world,” said Ryan Downton, a lawyer who represented players in an eligibility case in Louisiana. “It’s not a profession you can do for 20 years, it’s a profession you can do for five years. But when you’re within that five years, you’ve got a right to earn a living.”
