Tyson Foods’ decision to close a beef plant that employs nearly one third of residents of Lexington, Nebraska, could devastate the small city and undermine the profits of ranchers nationwide.
Closing a single slaughterhouse might not seem significant, but the Lexington plant employs roughly 3,200 people in the city of 11,000 and has the capacity to slaughter some 5,000 head of cattle a day. Tyson also plans to cut one of the two shifts at a plant in Amarillo, Texas, and eliminate 1,700 jobs there. Together those two moves will reduce beef processing capacity nationwide by 7-9%.

They never saw it coming. Both guardsmen were armed. A Major in the National Guard, who was unarmed and doing his spot checks of the guardsmen was in the block, heard the shots and turned to see the shooter who spotted him. He took cover behind a truck. The suspect came for the Major who pulled out his pocket knife, and bravely took on the suspect who was reloading his revolver. The Major began stabbing the suspect in the head. Another guardsman in the area who was armed, them drew his pistol and shot the suspect twice, once in the leg and once in the buttocks. The Major stated that when the suspect began shooting he heard him shout, Allahu akbar!”

Utah Death row inmate Ralph Menzies dies of natural causes
Death row inmate Ralph Menzies, whose execution by firing squad was put on hold in August so he could have a new competency hearing, has died of natural causes.
The Utah Department of Corrections issued a prepared statement Wednesday afternoon that Menzies, 67, "passed away from presumed natural causes at a local hospital at 1:45 p.m. today."
Corrections officials say they made the announcement after Menzies' next of kin were notified as well as the family of Maurine Hunsaker, the woman he was convicted of kidnapping and brutally murdering in 1986.
