Supreme Court rules 5-4 that almost half of Oklahoma is an Indian reservation including Tulsa - meaning state authorities can NOT charge Native Americans on that land
  • Justices rule 5-4 that vast chunk of Oklahoma - including parts of Tulsa - are under Indian tribal authority
  • Decision written by Trump pick Neil Gorsuch and backed by the court's liberal wing says Native Americans cannot be prosecuted by state officials
  • Gorsuch wrote that Trail of Tears treaties had not been overtaken by Congress and had to be respected - but have not been since 1866
  • Case started with  71-year-old Jimcy McGirt, who is serving a 500-year prison sentence for molesting a child.
  • He argued as a Creek Nation member state authorities had no right to prosecute him for offenses on tribal lands
  • Oklahoma said land was not tribal - but Supreme Court holds that it is
  • McGirt could potentially be retried in federal court, as could Patrick Murphy, convicted of killing fellow tribe member in 1999 and sentenced to death

Protests in Salt Lake City follow DA ruling on Palacios shooting; governor declares emergency
Following a peaceful march around a Salt Lake City block, the group of around 200 gathered again outside the District Attorney’s office. After messages were shared, including about how life would be for Palacios-Carbajal if the cops had “chose to use a taser,” some protesters took metal rods and smashed multiple windows of the building.
And with that, there was no more peace.
Salt Lake City police in riot gear formed lines on both sides of the protest about 8 p.m., and a police helicopter circled the group announcing it was now “an unlawful gathering.” While many of the sizable group dispersed at that time, a group of 50-100 stood shoulder to shoulder and faced down the police presence. With sirens shrieking and police car lights glowing, the group chanted, “We aren’t scared.”

Utah’s governor faces ‘fine line’ politically on face masks
Utah is not joining some two dozen states including Texas, California, Nevada and Pennsylvania that require masks be worn in public because state legislative and business leaders as well as others agreed it’s best to try a voluntary approach first, Herbert said. He is giving Utahns until Aug. 1 to reduce the number of cases… The governor’s decision not to go as far as a statewide mask mandate comes a day after both Senate President Stuart Adams, R-Layton, and House Speaker Brad Wilson, R-Kaysville, released statements encouraging Utahns to wear masks rather than demanding they comply with a government order.
