Being Jewish in Manhattan comes with strings attached
High wire strewn through city lets Jews keep the faith
Orthodox Jews are allowed to push baby strollers and carry prayer books on the Jewish Sabbath thanks to a loophole made of fishing line that stretches some 18 miles on utility poles around the city.
The line forms a nearly invisible enclosure, called an eruv in Hebrew. Jews are prohibited from doing these simple tasks outside on the Sabbath, but carry them out in the confines of the eruv because it symbolically turns a public space into a private one.

Governors asks Pentagon to withdraw proposal he says would undermine National Guard authority
Governors from across the United States are pushing back against a Pentagon proposal they say would undermine gubernatorial authority over the National Guard by allowing the Air Force to transfer some space-focused National Guard units into the Space Force.
The U.S. Department of Defense submitted a legislative proposal to the Senate Armed Services Committee in March, asking lawmakers to allow units to be transferred to the newest branch of the military without approval from governors, who serve as commanders-in-chief over National Guard members in their states.
Polis, a Democrat, expressed "strong opposition" to the proposal and said the change would "strip governors of our rightful authority over National Guard units" and "weaken national security." A letter signed by 53 governors — from most states and several territories — and sent to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin last week said the rule would "deeply damage the relationship between the states and the federal government."
But Polis called the proposal a "break with the traditional authority that governors have over National Guard units in our own states and a dangerous precedent on the slippery slope toward federalization of our state National Guard resources."

'It makes sense for our Brainwashed students': BYU-Pathway Worldwide launches 3-year bachelor's degree
The program eliminates elective credits while maintaining required major and general education courses, to help students reach their educational goals faster.
The impact on students, said BYU-Pathway Worldwide President Brian Ashton, is expected to be immense. Part of this is due to the unique makeup of the school's 65,000 students, with more than 60% coming from countries like Nigeria, the Philippines, Ghana, Brazil and Mexico.
"Many of them live in areas where labor markets don't work very well. They may be struggling to put food on the table. Anything we can do to speed up their progress towards a bachelor's degree makes a big difference in their lives."
90-credit, three-year bachelor's degree, the initial cost is $6,200. And, that's without any scholarships. The minimum scholarship brings the cost down to $5,500.
"In Africa, for example, most students can finish a bachelor's degree for under 300 U.S. dollars. We want as many people to be able to access university-level education as possible."

Army Confirms Russia Has Detained an American Soldier
“On May 2, 2024, Russian authorities in Vladivostok, Russia, detained an American soldier on charges of criminal misconduct,” Army Spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith said in a statement:
The soldier was detained in Russia after he had traveled there on his own from South Korea, where he was stationed, according to NBC News, which first reported his detention.
The soldier was not on official business, according to the network. He is accused of “stealing from a woman,” officials said.
The soldier joins fellow Americans — Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan — as detainees in Russia. Gershkovich was detained and jailed in March 2023, and Whelan was arrested in 2018.
Tensions are high between the U.S. and Russia. The U.S. is flowing billions in military and economic aid to Ukraine, which is engaged in a hot war with Russia.
