Macquarie Bank has announced it will begin phasing out cash, cheques and phone payment services in a bid to transition to a “completely digital system”.
Cheques will be scrapped from January next year and the bank’s automated phone service will be shut down in March.
Customers at the bank, which is the nation’s fifth-largest, will also no longer able to make deposits or withdrawals over the counter at branches from May 2024.
"Leaving cheques in the system is an increasingly costly way of servicing a declining fraction of payments.
"Today, we're signalling an intention to wind down the cheque system by no later than 2030, leading the way by moving Commonwealth government departments to new forms of payments by 2028."
Other nations that have phased out or stopped the use of cheques include New Zealand, Sweden, Finland, South Africa, Norway, and The Netherlands.

Tim Ballard, the founder of Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.) is breaking his silence after being condemned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The Church released a statement to FOX 13 News and other media on Friday, referring to Tim Ballard’s behavior as “morally unacceptable.”
The statement was in response to documents obtained by VICE News, detailing a criminal investigation into Tim Ballard and his nonprofit; “Tim is fully convinced that he is supposed to be the ‘Mormon Messiah and lead people back to the church.’”
The records reportedly state Tim Ballard received “psychic readings” and communication from the prophet Nephi “to get intel.”

LDS Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints denounces claims made by OUR former leader Tim Ballard
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement denouncing claims of the Church’s connection to Tim Ballard, calling his activities “morally unacceptable.”
The Church said Tim Ballard, the founder and former CEO of the well-known non-profit Operation Underground Railroad, “betrayed” religious leader President M. Russell Ballard’s friendship (no family relation).
“President [M. Russell] Ballard never authorized his name, or the name of the Church, to be used for Tim’s personal or financial interests,” the statement read.

President Ballard and Tim Ballard (no relation) established a friendship a number of years ago. That friendship was built on a shared interest in looking after God’s children wherever they are and without regard to their circumstance. However, that relationship is in the past. For many months, President Ballard has had no contact with the founder of Operation Underground Railroad (OUR). The nature of that relationship was always in support of vulnerable children being abused, trafficked, and otherwise neglected. Once it became clear Tim Ballard had betrayed their friendship, through the unauthorized use of President Ballard’s name for Tim Ballard’s personal advantage and activity regarded as morally unacceptable, President Ballard withdrew his association. President Ballard never authorized his name, or the name of the Church, to be used for Tim’s personal or financial interests.
In addition, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints never endorsed, supported or represented OUR, Tim Ballard or any projects associated with them.
President Ballard loves children, all over the world. It has been his mission and life’s work to look after them, care for them, and point them to their Savior.
LDS Female Missionary dies while serving in the Philippines
The missionary, Taylor Erin Maw, 20, is from Snoqualmie, Washington. Maw was called to serve in the Philippines Angeles Mission and had been serving since June 2022.
Maw had been in the hospital for treatment of an undetermined illness prior to her death. The cause of her death has not been determined.
