Pandemic-era food and rent assistance programs ending soon in Utah
Two assistance programs that helped Utahns with food and rent during the pandemic will stop in the coming months.
The emergency monthly increase for food stamps, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, called SNAP, will end in March. The monthly increase averaged between $175 to $200 per household.
The change impacts all of the 74,000 Utah households that
receive SNAP benefits.

Major US City Prepares for Nurses to Go on Strike, Impacting Hospitals
The New York City Office of Emergency Management is preparing in case thousands of New York hospital nurses go on strike on Jan. 9, officials said.
As of the morning of Jan. 8, the New York State Nurses Association, a union representing 42,000 members across the state, said no new agreement was reached with area hospitals. It said about 8,700 union nurses at three hospitals—Montefiore Bronx, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Mount Sinai Morningside and West—will go on strike if the union’s demands aren’t met.

Plan to ride an OHV in Utah? You may need to take an educational course first
Riding off-highway vehicles is a popular activity in Utah, but anyone 18 and older will now need to complete an online educational course before they can ride most off-highway vehicles on state public lands.
The free educational course is required for adults who plan to operate Type I all-terrain vehicles, which are ATVs that have three or more wheels with handlebars that are designed to be straddled. It's also required for side-by-side vehicles, Type III off-highway vehicles like modified jeeps or "rock crawlers" and off-highway motorcycles, according to the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation.
Once complete, the course certificate is valid for the remainder of the rider's life. The course is not required for snowmobiles, as well as for participants of guided tours, implements of husbandry and sanctioned OHV events. It's also not required for any all-terrain vehicle that's registered as a standard road vehicle (with full-sized license plates), officials add.

Security researchers were able to gain “super administrative access” to Reviver, the sole provider of California’s digital license plates, and track the GPS location of all of vehicles they are associated with.
After gaining access, a hacker could track the physical GPS location of all license plates of Reviver customers, as well as change the slogan or personalized message at the bottom of the plates to arbitrary text.
Additionally, a hacker could update any vehicle status to “STOLEN,” which would alert authorities.
A hacker could also access all user records, including what vehicles people owned, their physical address, phone number, and email address, as well as access the fleet management functionality for any company, locate, and manage all vehicles in a fleet, Curry noted.
