US sued for pollution from retardant drops on wildfires
An environmental group filed a lawsuit Tuesday against U.S. Forest Service officials that alleges they polluted waterways during their campaigns against wildfires by inadvertently dropping large volumes of chemical flame retardant into streams.
The main ingredients in fire retardant are inorganic fertilizers and salts that can be harmful to some fish, frogs, crustaceans and other aquatic species.
The lawsuit alleges the continued use of retardant from aircraft violates the Clean Water Act.

The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food says it has confirmed six new cases of avian influenza on turkey farms in Sanpete County and one backyard flock in Cache County.
Sixteen turkey farms and two backyard flocks have now been infected by the highly pathogenic avian influenza this fall.
The agriculture department says it is still monitoring the outbreaks on the affected farms, and said all birds on the farms have been quarantined or depopulated, but warned bird owners to prepare for a continued increase in cases.

PRESTON, Idaho — Restoration of the Bear River Massacre site is underway Monday as some 400,000 invasive trees will be removed.
It's all part of a process that the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone calls "a healing of the land" and a blessing to have on workers who will spend dozens of hours working on the project.
As the Utah Conservation Corps starts tearing down hundreds of thousands of invasive Russian olive trees, it's the first step in returning these traditional wintering grounds to what they would have looked like before the Bear River Massacre in 1863.
Conservationists say just one Russian olive tree can take in 75 gallons of water a day, and there are about 400,000 of them on the land.
Over $6 million in grants and other funding is going towards the rehabilitation of the site here, but the tribe is still looking to raise about $5 million more for an interpretive center up above.
