Jazz owner warned Utah legislature its Transgender bill could cost state (MONEY) the NBA All-Star Game
Tue, March 16, 2021 - A Utah bill that would have barred transgender students from competing on girls sports team stalled in a state senate committee last month. The state's local basketball team might have played a part in that.
Days before the bill's demise, Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith and team president Jim Olson took part in a backroom meeting discussing the bill with Rep. Kera Birkeland, the bill's sponsor, and a handful of other legislators and parties, according to Bryan Schott of The Salt Lake Tribune.
During the meeting, which Birkeland confirmed took place to the Tribune, Smith reportedly expressed concerns about the bill's impact on transgender youth and a backlash that could cost the state the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. The report did not indicate the meeting was contentious, just "very frank."
The Jazz were awarded the 2023 All-Star Game back in 2019 after a $125 million renovation of the Vivint Arena. Utah has not hosted an All-Star game since 1993.
The meeting also reportedly discussed the bill's potential impact on Salt Lake City's bit to host the 2030 or 2034 Winter Olympics.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said he was "not comfortable" with the bill as written. Subsequent meetings led to a bill the governor approved of, but Birkeland reportedly said she "just didn't feel good about it." The senate committee adjourned on Feb. 24 without taking a vote, tabling the issue for now

Auto-enrollment may be just what Americans need to save more for retirement — but perhaps only if the government makes it a requirement.
Only half of Americans participate in a workplace retirement plan, a staggering statistic considering how much of the responsibility for funding an adequate retirement now falls on individuals.
Congress members have included this key provision in the Secure Act 2.0, the latest legislative proposal aimed at fixing retirement security for all Americans.

- More members foresee rate hikes in coming years, but not enough to change the forecast for none through at least 2023.

CNN (FAGGOT) Don Lemon: Traditional Marriage 'Is Not What God Is About'
On Monday, CNN host Don Lemon lectured the Roman Catholic Church and all other Christian denominations on The View, declaring — as if he had been given direct inspiration from God — that the traditional definition of marriage is “not what God is about.” He suggested that racial segregation and other forms of segregation are ultimately responsible for Christians’ supposedly backward definition of marriage… Lemon declared. “God is not about hindering people or even judging people…
Of course, the Bible could not be more plain about the sinfulness of homosexual activity, and this sinfulness cannot form the bedrock of an institution like marriage (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:10; Romans 1:26-27). None of this is to suggest that “straight” Christians should pride themselves on opposite-sex orientation. Any sex outside of marriage is sinful, and all Christians are redeemed sinners.

Gov. Cox issues emergency declaration over Utah's persistent drought conditions
Gov. Spencer Cox on Wednesday issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency due to ongoing drought conditions in Utah.
The order, which goes into effect immediately, allows counties and cities to begin the process of implementing water restriction plans for the irrigation season and encourages all Utah residents to reduce indoor water waste by consuming less and fixing any "irrigation inefficiencies."
The state provides ways to reduce water consumption through its "Slow The Flow" program. Tips include reducing shower times, fixing water leaks, and running full dishwasher and washing machine loads. That's on top of reducing the use of water on lawns and using "water-wise" landscaping.

Utah among 21 states threatening legal action over COVID-19 relief bill and tax cuts
Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes is among nearly two dozen Republican attorneys general threatening legal action against the Biden administration if it doesn't clarify a provision in the $1.9 trillion economic relief package that appears to ban states from cutting taxes.
In a seven-page letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the attorneys general warn that restrictions on state efforts to cut taxes could be "the greatest attempted invasion of state sovereignty by Congress in the history of our Republic."
The provision calls into question tax cuts Utah lawmakers passed in the general session that ended March 5. It could mean the state must return that amount in aid received under the federal relief bill.

Pollution blamed for rising number of boys born with testicles in wrong place, ‘landmark study’ shows
Undescended testicles, also known as cryptorchidism, is the most common male genital defect, affecting between 1% and 8% of newborns. In the U.S., about 200,000 boys are born with the condition each year.
In most cases, the organ corrects itself within six months of birth. Around 1 in 100 boys need surgery to move them into the right position, however. If left untreated, those with the condition may have fertility problems later in life and face a higher risk of testicular cancer.
While certain chemicals have been linked to cryptorchidism, such as phthalates and pesticides, major industrial pollutants have been ignored, until now.
