State health officials submit plans for COVID-19 vaccine rollout
SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health has submitted their plans for a statewide COVID-19 vaccine campaign to the CDC.
The submission deadline was Friday, Oct. 16.
The immunization director for the Utah Department of Health said our state will be ready to distribute when a vaccine is ready.
"This is going to be the largest vaccination campaign that we have ever done, " said Rich Lakin, state immunization director. "We're trying to do it in an efficient manner, yet trying to do it as quickly as possible, which makes it difficult."
The CDC told states to get ready to vaccinate by Nov. 1, and Utah will be ready.
The greatest complication, Lakin said, is not knowing anything about the vaccine itself because none has been approved.
Where will Utahns get it?
"The public will have an option to either go to a private physician if they have the vaccine, or they can go to the pharmacy," said Lakin. "They can also go to their local health department."

As Wise as a Serpent
“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” —Mathew 10
That Scripture has always bothered me. For some reason I could never understand why Jesus would encourage us to take advice from the Devil. It flew in the face of everything I had always been taught about the battle between good and evil.
Jesus good…Satan bad. Most of us have been taught that throughout our lives. Why would Jesus tell us to emulate the “wisdom” of the serpent?
We understand the serpent is synonymous with Satan who is the one who instigated the fall of mankind from a relationship with The Almighty. Satan is the embodiment of evil and the sworn enemy of Jesus Christ.
The invisible world around us is more real than the average American understands. “As above so below” is a popular occult mantra. The dark side understands the power of the spiritual realm in fighting for control of the earth. Christians have yet to figure it out.
Hence, the admonition to study the wisdom of the serpent. Because our focus has been primarily on “things above”, we have ignored our responsibility to be “salt and light” to the natural world. Salt is a preservative. Light exposes evil.

Arrest of former Mexican defense minister shakes military
The arrest of Mexico’s former defense minister in the United States on charges that he protected a drug cartel in exchange for bribes is a blow to Mexico’s military, one of the few institutions that had maintained the confidence of the people.
Until Thursday’s arrest of retired Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos at Los Angeles International Airport, the military was still respected by virtue of appearing to be largely above the corruption commonly seen in other pieces of Mexico’s security apparatus, despite documented human rights abuses.

Ed Firmage, pacifist Utah law prof who persuaded LDS Church to oppose MX missiles, dies at 85
At the height of the Cold War in the late 1970s, when the United States and Russia were amassing their nuclear arsenals, Congress and the military were pressuring top officials in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to endorse deploying MX missiles in Utah’s West Desert.
Though a large national and regional coalition of peacemakers was protesting the move, one man was able to get the Utah-based faith to oppose it — Ed Firmage.
His grandfather, Hugh B. Brown, had been in the governing First Presidency, and young Firmage had become well known to Latter-day Saint leadership all his life.
Over several years, Firmage huddled dozens of times with then-President Spencer W. Kimball and other top church leaders to lobby against the missile project, said Firmage’s son, Ed Firmage Jr. “Dad always came with reams of papers, which included quotes from other church leaders, about being pacifists.”
In 1981, the church came out strongly against the proposed missile project. Once it did, Utah politicians lined up against it. too.
He was very close to Brown, his maternal grandfather, who was a liberal Democrat. When the boy asked his granddad why he was in that particular party, Firmage recalled that Brown replied: “Eddie, I think the Democratic Party is more sensitive to the poor.”
As a top church leader, Brown opposed the faith’s priesthood and temple ban on Blacks, speaking ardently against it.
The grandson arranged secret meetings for the Mormon official with several prominent Black activists, and together “they plotted a rollout strategy,” Firmage Jr. said, in the event that the church discontinued its policy.
But that historic move didn’t come until 1978, some 2 1/2 years after Brown’s death.
He worked on refugee rights, particularly for Tibetans, and formed a close connection with the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India. He spoke out on behalf of LGBTQ rights, opposing East High’s 1990s decision to ban all clubs rather than allow a gay-straight alliance. He wrote to newspapers about climate change and politics. He championed women’s equality.
He remained a Latter-day Saint of record until the day he died, but the activist drew on several other faith traditions — including Catholic, Episcopal and Buddhist — to add layers to his Mormonism.
