Chief Justice Roberts joined the the liberals
in the Supreme Court against a California church challenging Governor Newsom’s
lockdown orders.
In a 5-4 vote late on Friday, Roberts broke
from other conservative justices to rule in favor of the state. The case was
brought by the South Bay United Pentecostal Church in Chula Vista, which said
Newsom’s stay-at-home order violated religious freedoms.
Robers wrote in his opinion on the ruling that
because restrictions are also in place for other non-religious public
gatherings like movie theaters and shopping malls, religious liberty is not
threatened.
